January 21, 2018

The world in 2012 continues to face global issues including the economic crisis, climate change, environmental matters and threats of conflict. In that context, the left theory, after more than two decades since the downfall of the Soviet Union, requires an alternative reflection searching for socialist approaches to tackle the current problems.

On the days 29th and 30th November 2012 in Hanoi, the Center for Policy Studies and Analysis (CEPSTA) under the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (USSH HN), with the support of Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung (RLS) Hanoi, held an international workshop on the topic of “Alternative Left Theory – comparing experience from four countries: Vietnam, Algeria, Mozambique and Cuba”. The workshop invited experts from Germany, Algeria, Mozambique, Cuba, France and Vietnam to present analyses looking at the four countries. Attending the workshop, in addition to the speakers, there were also representatives from the Central Council for Theory of the Communist Party of Vietnam, different universities and academic institutions to discuss the relevant issues and exchange their ideas as well as experiences with the expectation that those could be utilized for further development.

The international workshop is one of the activities belonging to the project “Alternative Left Theory” which is carried out by USSH HN in cooperation with RLS. The project, developed in 2010, is part of RLS’s program component on alternative development models that discusses new approaches of socialism and left ideas.

The workshop was also an opportunity for local and international scholars to present their researches, discuss and learn from experiences of each other regarding the topic of “people’s participation, economic growth and sustainable development, gender equality as well as international relations since the downfall of the Soviet Union”. Concretely, the workshop reviewed the values of socialism and retrieved experimental lessons regarding sustainable development. In addition, the workshop discussed the role that civil society plays and plaid in the development of the countries and in how far it contributed to the survival of the systems. The topics of gender equality and international relations were only unfortunately only analysed from a Vietnamese perspective. The workshop was concluded by raising the question: “How will Vietnam, Algeria, Mozambique and Cuba look like in ten years?” This offered an unconventional space for the speakers to think out of the typical research box.

The content discussed in the workshop is expected to improve the awareness/understanding of the current situations of the researched fields as well as to exchange about experiences of the left theory in Vietnam with left theories from different countries. Moreover, the workshop will also contribute to an improvement in partnership between Vietnamese and foreign scholars in the field of left theory and socialist studies.

After the workshop, selected papers are collected for publication in order to share the experiences of development with a broader audience.

The workshop were as follows:
